THE royal YORKSHIRE REGIMENT

Our Latest Museum Donations

The York Army Museum is proud to display the latest generous donations received from the families of Corporal Charles Pamment and Private George Frederick Sustins, between them, the recipients of three Military Medals.  Our thanks to Zane Duncan from the University of York who volunteered his time to put together a fitting Remembrance week tribute.

Corporal Charles Pamment served with the 8th Battalion, The West Yorkshire Regiment during the First World War and was the recipient of two Military Medals, a rare achievement.  On September 1st, 1918, Cpl Pamment was involved in the 2nd Battle of Bapaume. It was during this action that he was awarded his first Military Medal. In the following month, on October 20th, 1918, during the Battle of the Selle, L/Sergt Pamment distinguished himself once again and was awarded a bar to his Military Medal.

Private George Frederick Sustins was living in Woolwich and worked as a steel bencher when the Second World War broke out. He was called up in June 1940 and joined the 2nd Battalion The West Yorkshire Regiment. While serving in Burma he was awarded a Military Medal for his; “utter disregard of danger and his determination to destroy the enemy was a decisive factor at a time when the success or failure of the attack lay in the balance”.
